This is Portugal's largest wine region. For "traditional" Vinho Verde, carbon dioxide is usually added to give it sparkle. Although Vinho Verde is traditionally bone dry, most commercial brands are lightly sweetened to appeal to overseas markets.

White Wines - light, acidic, sometimes off-dry and often slightly sparkling
Primary Grapes - Alvarinho, Loureiro, Trajadura, Pederna

Red Wines - dry, fizzy and acidic
Primary Grapes - Azal, Vinhão, Espadeiro.
